David Altchek, MD, examined the left shoulder of Pittsburgh Pirates' outfielder Gregory Polanco, MLB.com reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. Mr. Polanco was experiencing left knee and shoulder discomfort after sustaining injuries from an awkward slide into second base during the team's Sept. 7 game.
2. Dr. Altchek examined Mr. Polanco's injuries Sept. 11 and recommended surgery to repair his shoulder.
3. Mr. Polanco underwent surgery to repair an acute left shoulder dislocation Sept. 12.
4. Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said Mr. Polanco also sustained a bone bruise in his left knee from the same play and that his knee will need six to eight weeks to recover. The club has not announced how long Mr. Polanco's shoulder recovery will take.
5. Dr. Altchek is an orthopedic surgeon and co-chief emeritus at New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery's sports medicine and shoulder services. He is also the medical director for the New York Mets and a medical consultant for the NBA.
