Dr. David Altchek performs elbow surgery on Pirates' Chad Kuhl: 4 details

David Altchek, MD, performed Tommy John surgery on Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Chad Kuhl's right elbow, MLB.com reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. Mr. Kuhl initially underwent conservative management treatment for the right forearm strain, which he sustained June 26 during a game. He was then placed on the team's disabled list July 31.

2. Dr. Altchek performed the procedure Sept. 19 at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

3. Mr. Kuhl's recovery time is estimated at 14 to 16 months, and he will miss the entirety of the 2019 season.

4. Dr. Altchek is an orthopedic surgeon and co-chief emeritus for Hospital for Special Surgery's sports medicine and shoulder services. He is also the medical director for the New York Mets and a medical consultant for the NBA.
