Dr. Steven Shin performs finger surgery on Blue Jays' Aaron Sanchez: 5 details

Steven Shin, MD, performed surgery on Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez's right index finger, MLB.com reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. Mr. Sanchez sustained the injury prior to the team's June 21 game, during which the right-hander attempted to pitch but only managed to stay in one inning.

2. Dr. Shin performed the procedure Sept. 25, and Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins said Mr. Sanchez is expected to recover before spring training in 2019.

3. In 2017, Mr. Sanchez was on the team's disabled list for 151 days due to blister and tendon issues in his right middle finger.

4. Dr. Shin is an orthopedic surgeon and the director of hand surgery at Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute.

5. Dr. Shin is a hand consultant to the following teams: Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, USC Athletics and Loyola Marymount University Athletics. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, former contributing editor for the Yearbook of Hand and Upper Limb Surgery and a reviewer for the Journal of Hand Surgery.
