3D printing team aims to improve orthopedic residency training

Surface Technology

A team of College Station-based Texas A&M University engineers and physicians are using 3D printed simulators and visualized performance data to enhance orthopedic surgeon residencies.

What you should know:

1. Texas A&M brought together engineering and medical researchers to improve residency training.

2. The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, which is funded by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, awarded the team its Simulation Research Grant to support the advancement efforts.

3. The team's ultimate goal is to improve residency training modules to include hands-on physical and data-driven virtual simulations.

4. The 3D models are anatomical replicas made of a bone-mimicking composite. Professors can print bones that simulate rare diseases, providing invaluable educational opportunities.

5. As the residents advance through the simulated procedures, embedded sensors capture performance information that professors can use to analyze resident performance.
