The Spine Journal study highlights bone ingrowth, strength of 3D-printed PEKK

Surface Technology

Oxford Performance Materials recently published a study in The Spine Journal comparing the characteristics of 3D-printed PEKK with PEEK and titanium-coated PEEK.

Researchers demonstrated superior push-out force in 3D-printed PEEK compared to PEEK and a better bone ingrowth compared to both PEEK and Ti-coated PEEK.

The PEKK implants showed a significant increase in bony apposition over time and no fibrotic tissue formation, suggesting superior efficacy in spinal fusion procedures by promoting osseointegration and decreasing complication rates.

The study, "A Comparative Study of Three Biomaterials in an Ovine Defect Model: A TETRAfuse PEKK Study," evaluated the three biomaterials in an in vivo model.
