Dr. Kitchel, of Eugene, Ore., presented data comparing bone response to the presence of an implant manufactured from PEEK devices versus a PEEK device coated with Ti-Bond porous titanium.
Results showed the Ti-Bond-coated devices were five times stronger than traditional PEEK devices. Ti-Bone devices also had bone forming in the porous coating, whereas typical PEEK devices formed a solid barrier that fibrous tissue formed around.
Researchers believe the technology may allow surgeons to get a more stable spinal fusion fixation with better long-term patient outcomes.
