The first surgery using Biomet Spine's MaxAn One Anterior Cervical System was performed at Crittenton Hospital Medical Center in Rochester Hills, Mich.
The system is designed to reduce hospital and ambulatory surgery center costs by increasing efficiencies. The single-use system is offers sterile-packed implants and instrument kits. The sterility could reduce product contamination and lower infection risk while removing the labor-intensive activities for medical staff, including preoperative sterilization and postoperative cleaning/decontamination.
The system is also designed to optimize product handling and eliminate the danger for using damaged materials. The system was also designed with cost in mind.
The MaxAn One has up to 30 degrees of screw angulation, which allows for the shortest possible plate to help reduce adjacent level ossification. John LaMacchia, MD, performed the first procedure. "This will be especially beneficial when I have multiple anterior cervical discectomy and fusion surgeries on the same day because we'll be able to avoid delays due to processing and resterilization," he said. "The system will also benefit hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers by providing much improved traceability of implants and instruments, reducing the storage space and dramatically reducing the logistical steps required with reusable implant and instrument sets."
