Zimmer, Biomet Among Those Bidding for Astra Tech

Spinal Tech

Zimmer Holdings and Biomet are among those who are bidding for AstraZeneca's Astra Tech, a maker of dental implants and other medical devices, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek news report.

AstraZeneca is selling its business line to focus its strategy on its core strength — prescription drugs. The pharmaceutical company has hired JPMorgan Chase to assist in reviewing "strategic options" and value maximization, according to the news report.

JPMorgan released information about Astra Tech last month to prospective buyers, which also include Nobel Biocare Holding, Straumann Holding and Dentsply International. First-round bids are due this week, and the race for participating buyers should be more definite next week during second-round bids. Astra Tech could be sold as one unit or in multiple parts and could sell for $1.8 billion-$2.1 billion, according to the news report.
