In a Medscape Business of Medicine article, Betsy Nicoletti, owner of Medical Practice Consulting, discusses making the ICD-10 transition and lays out four steps that medical practices should include in their transition plan.
The four steps are:
1. Stop using unspecified ICD-9 codes, whether selecting these in the EHR or using a paper encounter form.
2. Talk to your vendor and ask the right questions.
3. If your vendor is offering a translation program, test it more than once.
4. Print out a frequency listing of current ICD-9 codes and sort them by system, and then try assigning ICD-10 codes to them.
