William Allen, MD, passed away this past Mon., Sept. 12, according to the Columbia Daily Tribune. He was 81 years old.
Here are five things to know about Dr. Allen:
1. His clinical interests included biomaterials, biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system, intraarticular meniscal suture techniques, joint replacement and sports medicine.
2. He was active in multiple professional societies, including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, of which he was a founding member. He served as AOSSM's initial treasurer and president.
3. Prior to his retirement in 2001, he served as the director of the Gainesville-based University of Florida's orthopedic residency program and the Columbia-based University of Missouri's division chief of orthopedic surgery.
4. He was drafted into the U.S. Army Medical Corps during his residency. He served as a battle group surgeon at Fort Lewis in Washington state.
5. He earned his medical degree from University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine. He attended California-based Stanford University for an orthopedic surgery residency in 1961, which he returned to in 1963 after his time in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He went on to complete a biomechanics fellowship at Cleveland-based Case Western Reserve University.
