Stryker to fully launch Serrato pedicle screw: 5 things to know

Spinal Tech

Stryker plans to commercially launch the Serrato pedicle screw system during the North American Spine Society Annual Meeting taking place Oct. 25 to 28.

Here are five things to know:

1. The Serrato pedicle screw is a dual-lead screw intended for use in the non-cervical spine. The device aims to reduce work, increase speed and enhance surgical efficiency.

2. The screw is designed with enhanced cutting flutes that reduce work by lowering the insertion torque; the screw's TrueTip geometry allows for precise insertion and bone engagement.

3. Stryker has gathered feedback from initial surgeon customers since the device first released in August. The screw will be more widely available after the full commercial launch over the next few days.

4. Serrato received FDA clearance in August as well, and in the first month more than 100 surgeons used the technology with the Xia 3 Spinal System.

"The Serrato pedicle system from Stryker has added a new level of versatility to the armamentarium that a spine surgeon has in all complex spinal procedures," said Alexander Vaccaro, MD, PhD, president of Philadelphia-based Rothman Institute and one of the first surgeons to use Serrato. "The new screw design affords excellent screw purchase."

5. Xia 3 Spinal System is intended for use in the noncervical spine and to provide additional support during fusion using autograft or allograft in skeletally mature patients to treat acute and chronic instabilities of deformities: degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, trauma, spinal stenosis, curvatures, tumor, pseudarthrosis and failed previous fusion.
