Charles D. Rosen, MD, is a spine surgeon with the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine. He is the founding director of the UCI Spine Center and a clinical professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at University of California, Irvine. He is co-founder and president of the Association for Medical Ethics as well as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The Association for Medical Ethics promotes financial transparency in medical research and the use of evidence-based medicine. Dr. Rosen testified in support of the Physician Payments Sunshine Act of 2008 to establish a national database listing payments and other gifts physicians receive from device companies. He is a highly respected surgeon and was on President Obama's short list of nominations for U.S. Surgeon General in 2010.
Dr. Rosen focuses on spinal degeneration, which includes suffering from herniated discs, spinal stenosis, instability and all the other consequences of this in the neck and lumbar spine. His current research focuses on developing a more accurate model of spinal biomechanics. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Rosen is an associate editor of the Journal of Ethics in Biology, Engineering and Medicine.
Dr. Rosen earned his medical degree from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute in New York City. He has also completed a fellowship in spine surgery and rehabilitation at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in Downey, Calif.
