Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Scott Boden of Emory Healthcare

Scott D. Boden, MD, is the director of Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center in Atlanta as well as professor and vice chair of the department of orthopedic surgery at Emory University School of Medicine.

He also serves as chief quality officer and CMO of Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital. In 2012, he helped found SkelRegen, a start-up company that aims at developing small molecule technologies. He currently serves as its chief medical, science and technology officer. He is a member of numerous professional societies, such as the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, International Society for Study of the Lumbar Spine and North American Spine Society.

 

Dr. Boden has authored more than 175 peer-reviewed articles on spine and basic science topics as well as 30 chapters and seven textbooks. He is co-editor of Seminars in Spine Surgery and a deputy editor of Spine. He has a won a wide array of awards over the course of his career, including the Scoliosis Research Society Evidence Based Medicine Award and the Leon Wiltse Award for Outstanding Contributions to the field of spine surgery from the North American Spine Society.

 

Dr. Boden is actively involved in research, and his research includes understanding the biology of spine fusion healing and bone graft substitutes. He is a named inventor on more than 30 issued patents. Dr. Boden helped Emory plan and open a freestanding multidisciplinary Musculoskeletal Outpatient Center in 2004 as well as an Orthopaedics & Spine Specialty Hospital in 2008.

 

"The most satisfying aspect of being a spine surgeon is having the privilege of giving patients their normal life back when the right treatment is matched with the right patient.  Spine is also a discipline that has many opportunities to develop new technologies and treatments which allows me to also pursue research in the field," says Dr. Boden.

 

Dr. Boden earned his medical degree at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine In Philadelphia and completed his residency at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Additionally, he has completed a spine fellowship at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals in Cleveland.
