Gunnar Andersson, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon and partner at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush in Chicago. He is the Ronald L. DeWald, M.D. Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He is a past president of the Orthopaedic Research Society. He is currently president of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery.
Dr. Andersson has received numerous honors during his career including the Muybridge Medal from the International Society of Biomechanics and the ISSLS Stryker Spine Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine. He is editor-in-chief of Spinal News International, a deputy editor for Spine and founding editor of Contemporary Spine Surgery.
Dr. Andersson has a professional interest in degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, spinal disorders as well as nonsurgical care, and his research interests include intervertebral disc biology, biomechanics and epidemiology of back pain. He has authored more than 320 original publications and more than 160 books and book chapters.
"The most satisfying moments of my career are when patients tell me I helped them find a solution to their disabling back or neck problem," says Dr. Andersson.
Dr. Andersson earned his medical degree from the University of Göteborg in Sweden. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Sahlgren Hospital in Sweden. Dr. Andersson is retiring at the end of the year.
