O-Arm Navigation for Pedicle Screw Placement: Helpful or Harmful?

Spine

A new study published in the International Journal of Spine Surgery examines the pedicle violation and navigational errors in pedicle screw insertion using an intraoperative O-arm.

The study authors examined 26 patients who underwent L4-5 fusion with O-arm based navigation to insert the 104 screws. The researchers found one screw breached the pedicle laterally and noted seven screws with non-significant anteriolateral cortical perforations at the L5 level.

The average axial and sagittal navigational error was 2.3 degrees and 3.1 degrees respectively.
