Findings from a new study published in The Spine Journal question off-label use for BMP in primary cervical spine fusions.
The study is a retrospective cohort study examining the Thompson Reuters MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters Database 2010. There were 61,937 patients in the study who received cervical spinal fusions from 2002 to 2009, with 1,677 who received BMP.
Findings include:
• BMP patients were 29 percent more likely to have complications and nervous system complications;
• BMP patients were more likely to undergo cervical revision fusions;
• 30-day readmission risk was greater among BMP patients;
• Readmission occurred 27.4 percent sooner among BMP patients;
• Patients that received BMP were more likely to receive CT scans and epidurals with the anterior surgical approaches.
