Here are 15 surgeons, hospitals and providers in the spine field who received awards and recognition over the past few months.

 

Texas Spine & Joint Hospital based in Longview received the Texas Hospital Quality Improvement Gold Award from TMF Health Quality Institute.

 

Morristown Medical Center earned the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for spine surgery.

 

The Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America awarded Richard M. Schwend, MD, the 2014 POSNA Humanitarian Award.

 

Los Angeles Minimally Invasive Spine Institute Founder George Rappard, MD, was inducted into Washington, D.C.'s Alpha Chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

 

Jeffrey Fischgrund, MD, was named the first Harry N. Herkowitz, M.D., Distinguished Chair in Orthopaedics of Beaumont Health System in Royal Oak, Mich.

 

Allegheny Health Network named Donald Whiting, MD, neurosurgery chair.

 

Roger Hӓrtl, MD, and his spine team at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York received the Ronald Apfelbaum Research Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. The award is sponsored by Aesculap and includes $15,000 funding for spine research.

 

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research and Development Division awarded the Medical College of Wisconsin $1 million to study spinal cord injury treatment with Shekar Kurpad, MD, as principal investigator.

 

Scoliosis Research Society honored Alvin H. Crawford, MD, and David S. Bradford, MD, with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

 

Spine Health Foundation awarded Richard Duncan, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon with Watauga Orthopaedics, the 2014 Hope Award.

 

SpineNevada Minimally Invasive Spine Institute Founder James Lynch, MD, received the High Fives Foundation Community Award. He became the High Fives Organization board director in 2013.

 

Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit named Steven N. Kalkanis, MD, chair of the department of neurosurgery and co-director of the Neuroscience Institute.

 

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons recognized Anselmo Pineda, MD, with the Humanitarian Award.

 

The Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America recognized Daniel J. Sucato, MD, chief of staff at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, with the Memorial Award.
