NYU Langone welcomes Dr. R. Shay Bess as head of adult spinal deformity: 7 key notes

NYU Langone Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases appointed R. Shay Bess, MD, chief of adult spinal deformity in the department of orthopedic surgery, effective Sept. 1.

Here are seven key notes:

 

1. Dr. Bess will also be director of spinal deformity research and an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at NYU School of Medicine.

 

2. He will take appointments at NYU Langone's Center for Musculoskeletal Care and the Hospital for Joint Diseases Ambulatory Care Center.

 

3. A member of both the Scoliosis Research Society and North American Spine Society, Dr. Bess is also the president of the International Spine Study Group Foundation.

 

4. Dr. Bess has written 15 book chapters and reviews and has also presented his research globally.

 

5. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Bess held the position of director of the Pediatric Scoliosis Services at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children/Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Denver.

 

6. Dr. Bess graduated from Columbia University in New York and continued his education at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He completed a residency at Case Western University in Cleveland and his postdoctoral spine fellowship in pediatric and adult scoliosis and spinal deformity at Washington University in St. Louis.

 

7. US News & World Report named NYU Langone a 2015-2016 "Best Hospital" for orthopedics.
