Roll over: Sleeping on side may improve spinal health

Spine

University of Virginia researchers found lymphatic vessels in the central nervous system. Prior to this finding, researchers did not think lymphatic vessels existed in the brain and spinal cord.

The Journal of Neuroscience published the study.

Here are three key points:

1. The researchers discovered the lymphatic vessels with fluorescence microscopy and radioactive tracing.

2. In their study on mice, the researchers discovered cerebrospinal fluid drained most effectively in mice lying on their sides opposed to those lying on their backs or standing.

3. These results indicate the possibility of body posture affecting the health of the brain and spinal system, as it helps with waste clearance.
