Orthopedic spine surgeon Vivek Mohan, MD, of The Spine Center of Dupage Medical Group in Naperville, Ill., shares his thoughts on the minimally invasive spine surgery landscape.
Question: What are the opportunities and challenges and in MIS spine today?
Dr. Vivek Mohan: A learning curve for older and traditional surgeons converting to MIS, as its adoption has not grown significantly in recent years. [Also,] improving fusion rates with biologics without bone morphogenetic protein, and minimizing cost in outpatient surgicenters, due to all the disposables.
Q: How does MIS spine fit into value-based care?
VM: [MIS spine fits into value-based care due to its] quicker recovery and discharge home. [In the] long term, [MIS spine offers] overall decreased bleeding, infection and reoperation rates.
Q: What do you believe the future has in store for the spine industry in the next five years?
VM: [The spine industry will see] improved biologics to improve fusion rates. [Also, the indstury will witness] decreased implant costs with sharing of margins if done in surgicenters.
