Pensacola, Fla.-based NeuroMicroSpine's Mark Giovanini, MD, performed the first outpatient transformational lumbar interbody fusion with the FDA-approved Avenue T device from Zimmer Biomet.
Here are five things to know:
1. Avenue T is a lumbar interbody device, incorporating integrated, zero-profile VerteBRIDGE® plating and is cleared for use with supplementation fixation. The surgeon can place the interbody device through a small incision with minimal blood loss.
2. The procedure can be performed in large patients with a BMI in the 40 range.
3. Overnight stay isn't required. Dr. Giovanini performed the procedure at Cornerstone Surgicare ASC, a freestanding surgery center without hospital affiliation.
4. The first procedure was on a patient with BMI over 40 and that patient was discharged within two hours after surgery.
5. The patient didn't have any complications and reported minimal pain after the procedure.
