NorthEast Spine & Sports Medicine in Jackson, N.J., is now offering spinal cord stimulator trials.
Here are five things to know:
1. Spinal cord stimulator trials treat neuropathic pain in a patient's back, arms or legs.
2. The procedure is geared for patients whose conditions failed to improve after undergoing standard treatments.
3. During the operation, the surgeon either inserts an epidural needle into the patient's lower back or makes a small incision before placing the stimulator along the spine.
4. The stimulator blocks pain signals from being sent to the targeted region of the body by transmitting gentle electrical pulses.
5. This is an outpatient procedure; patients can return home on the same day as the surgery.
