The Senate confirmed Ben Carson, MD, as the next Housing and Urban Development Secretary, the New York Times reports.

Here's what you should know.

 

1. The Senate voted 58-41 March 2, 2017, to confirm Dr. Carson.

 

2. Unlike other President Donald Trump cabinet appointees, Dr. Carson had little pushback from Senate Democrats.

 

3. Dr. Carson will helm HUD. The department has a $47 billion annual budget. It supports low-income renters, fights urban blight and helps homeowners keep their homes.

 

4. Dr. Carson, a former Republican presidential candidate, dropped out of the race on March 4, 2016, due to poor results on Super Tuesday.

 

5. He served as Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins director of pediatric neurosurgery until retiring in 2013.
