Medical College of Wisconsin names Dr. Shekar Kurpad chair of neurosurgery — 5 things to know

Milwaukee-based Medical College of Wisconsin appointed Shekar N. Kurpad, MD, PhD, chair of its department of neurosurgery, according to Urban Milwaukee.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. Dr. Kurpad has served as interim chair of MCW's department of neurosurgery since March 2016.

 

2. He is professor of neurosurgery at MCW, medical director of Milwaukee-based Spinal Cord Injury Center and clinical director of Milwaukee-based SpineCare.

 

3. Dr. Kurpad joined MCW as assistant professor in the department of neurosurgery in 2002, was promoted to associate professor in 2007 and received tenure in 2014.

 

4. MCW School of Medicine Dean and Executive Vice President Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, said, "Dr. Kurpad exemplifies the outstanding talent and expertise that our institution is able to attract and retain."

 

5. Much of Dr. Kurpad's clinical expertise focuses on spinal and cranial disorders with a special focus on spinal trauma, spinal cord injury, tumors of the spine and spinal cord and skull base tumors.
