Dr. Morgan Lorio receives 1st ISASS Distinguished Service Award
Morgan Lorio, MD, of Neuro-Spine Solutions in Bristol, Tenn., received the first Distinguished Service Award from the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery. Gunnar Andersson, MD, and his wife sponsored the award.
Slight drop in Q1 Johnson & Johnson orthopedic sales, hitting $2.3B
Johnson & Johnson reported orthopedic sales dropped slightly in the first quarter of 2017. Orthopedics sales dropped 0.7 percent in the Q1, hitting $2.3 billion. U.S. sales were $1.2 billion, a nearly 1 percent decline, while international sales were only down 0.3 percent to $948 million. Spine sales dropped 3.6 percent to $933 million in the Q1, driven by a 5.5 percent decline in U.S. spine sales. International spine sales dropped 1 percent.
American Hospital Association to award Dr. James Weinstein
The American Hospital Association will honor orthopedic spine surgeon James N. Weinstein, DO, with the Justin Ford Kimball Innovators Award on May 8 in Washington, D.C, at the AHA Annual Membership Meeting. Dr. Weinstein serves as CEO and president of Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health System. The AHA awards people or organizations developing "an influential, innovative approach to healthcare financing and/or healthcare delivery to improve access or coordination of care."
Implanet revenue up 3% in Q1
Implanet reported first quarter financial results, showing growth over the same period last year. The company reported a 3 percent increase in revenue in the Q1. The Jazz activity increased 27 percent, which accounted for 52 percent of the total revenue. In Q1 2016, Jazz activity made up 42 percent of the total revenue. The company sold 2,032 Jazz implants, reflecting a 70 percent volume growth in Q1 2017.
Dr. Richard Wohns performs live streamed total disc replacement at Maldives hospital
Richard Wohns, MD, performed a live cervical disc replacement procedure video streamed on Facebook and YouTube last week as part of the Maldives Spine Conference 2017. The event took place at ADK Hospital in Male, part of the Republic of Maldives, and attracted nearly 50,000 viewers.

Medicrea reports Q1 sales of $7.4M
Lyon, France-based Medicrea reported quarter one 2017 sales of $7.43 million. The company saw a 38 percent increase in U.S. cases leveraging the UNiD Rods.
Zyga announces 100th patient enrollee in SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion study
Minnetonka, Minn.-based Zyga announced the enrollment of the 100th patient in its SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion study. Orthopedic surgeon Antoine G. Tohmeh, MD, of Spokane, Wash.-based Deaconess Hospital performed the 100th operation. The 40-site trial will include 250 patients, and will evaluate how SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion impacts patients' long-term fusion and pain reduction.
