Dr. Joseph Cheng to lead University of Cincinnati neurosurgery department — 7 notes

University of Cincinnati College of Medicine named Joseph Cheng, MD, its new neurosurgery chair, effective July 1.

Here are seven notes:

 

1. Dr. Cheng will also serve as a neurosurgery professor at the medical school.

 

2. Currently, he is a professor and vice chair of neurosurgery at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn.

 

3. Among his new responsibilities, Dr. Chen will focus on improving postgraduate education as well as boost interactions between neurosurgery and other neuroscience-related departments.

 

4. The school's neurosurgery program will center on neurotrauma, cerebrovascular neurosurgery, adult brain tumor surgery, functional neurosurgery and complex spinal disease.

 

5. Dr. Cheng specializes in treating degenerative disease, deformities, trauma, tumors and spinal cord injury. He researches health policy, spinal biomechanics, spinal motion modeling, bone healing properties, spinal reconstruction and instrumentation as well as minimally invasive spinal techniques.

 

6. He served on the North American Spine Society's board of directors in 2013 and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons' board of directors from 2012 to 2013.

 

7. He completed his neurosurgical complex spine fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
