Oregon jury awards $4.5M after failed spine surgery affects patient's 'love life'
An Oregon jury awarded the plaintiffs in a failed spine surgery case $4.5 million after a procedure "seriously altered [the patient's] sex life with his wife," according to a report in The plaintiff underwent a corrective procedure in October 2013. However, according to the report, the plaintiff alleges his neurosurgeon did not remove the disc and didn't tell him there were complications with his procedure. The neurosurgeon claims he did inform the plaintiff about the failed surgery. Read more about the case here.
Renew Spine to form management services organization
Renew Spinal Care, a physician network focused on minimally invasive spine surgeons, retained a prominent national law firm and lobbying group in preparation for forming a management services organization. Surgeons affiliated with Renew perform minimally invasive procedures for a variety of back pain and spinal issues.
K2M acquires expandable spine implants product portfolio
K2M acquired the exclusive license to an expandable spine implants product portfolio, including 17 interbody technology patents. The company plans to integrate its 3-D printing technology, Lamellar 3D Titanium Technology, into new products developed with the expandable interbody technology.
51% of physicians report pharma reps share 'stale' information
Physicians are unimpressed with the information pharma reps offer during meetings, according to a new DRG Digital's Manhattan Research study. Of those physicians who interact with sales reps, 51 percent said reps offer information the physicians already know. This "stale detail" phenomenon is especially apparent in the oncology and dermatology fields. Sixty-eight percent of oncologists hear old information and 62 percent of dermatologists report similar experiences.
InVivo reports $6.3M Q2 net loss, aims to re-open INSPIRE study with FDA guidance
After temporarily halting enrollment in the INSPIRE study last week, InVivo announced on Aug. 9 the company is reviewing recommendations from the FDA and working toward re-opening the clinical trial. The company also reported a $6.3 million net loss for the second quarter.

Health Care Service Corp.'s Blue Cross Blue Shield divisions in Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas now cover minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion. The plans also kept their exclusive positive coverage for SI-BONE's iFuse Implant System, which went into effect Jan. 1. The updated policy took effect July 15.

Globus Medical reports 10.8% Q2 growth
Globus Medical reported its second quarter results with sales reaching $152.4 million, an increase of 10.8 percent. The company's second quarter net income was $28.7 million or 18.8 percent of its sales. Second quarter sales in the U.S. increased by 1.2 percent compared the second quarter of 2016.
