Stanford neurosurgery team complete medical mission in Uganda

Spine

The pediatric neurosurgery team at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., recently volunteered at a Ugandan hospital performing neurosurgical procedures with local residents.

Three things to know:

1. The medical team collaborated with Ugandan physicians at Mbara Hospital, where they removed tumors, treated hydrocephalus and repaired spina bifida in pediatric patients.

2. Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at LPCHS Gerald Grant, MD, and spine surgeon Anand Veeravagu, MD, led the Stanford team, which also mentored residents of Uganda's neurosurgery program.

3. Uganda has a population of more than 44 million and had only five neurosurgeons in 2009. Its developing residency program and collaboration with Sandford helped train 12 neurosurgeons with a dozen more in undergoing training now.
