Neurosurgeon Manish Shah, MD, recently worked with scientists at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston to create a pediatric imaging device that does not require infants to be put under anesthesia.
Four things to know:
1. The wearable imaging cap uses night-vision goggle technology, near-infrared light and high-resolution detectors to treat awake infants with brain disorders such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and birth-related stroke.
2. The device helps physicians diagnose the severity of an infant's brain injury and develop a treatment to optimize quality of life throughout childhood.
3. The research was funded by grants from the Memorial Hermann Foundation in Houston and a Men of Distinction award Dr. Shah received for excellence in community achievement.
4. Dr. Shah is assistant professor in the division of pediatric neurosurgery with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston.
