Denver pediatric surgeon performs region's 1st procedure with spinal tethering device

Spine

Jaren Riley, MD, of Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children in Denver, has performed the region's first surgery with  a vertebral body tethering system, KDVR reports.

Three things to know:

1. Developed by Zimmer Biomet, the device uses a set of screws and anchors that are implanted along a flexible cord, which can be tightened to correct spinal curvature over time.

2. Dr. Riley is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery and sports medicine.

3. The FDA approved the VBT system in August 2019.
