Police investigating single-vehicle crash that killed Alabama medical student; neurosurgeon survives

Police in Mobile, Ala., are investigating a single-vehicle crash that killed Samantha Alison Thomas, a third-year medical student at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL.com reports.

Ms. Thomas was a passenger in a car that crashed in a ditch on Aug. 1. Jonathan Nakhla, MD, a neurosurgeon at Mobile Infirmary was identified by police as the driver of the car, according to NBC 15.

Dr. Nakhla was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Ms. Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.
