Lumbar spinal arthroplasty system found to be more cost-effective than spinal fusions

Spine

A facet arthroplasty system was found to be more beneficial and cost-effective than traditional spinal fusions, according to a July 22 news release from Premia Spine.

Here's what you should know:

1. Premia Spine's Tops system is a facet joint replacement for the lumbar spine and is used for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis and degenerative spondylolisthesis.

2. Data analyzed by Neuronomics found the system is cost-effective and has a willingness-to-pay threshold of $100,000 within a year of surgery.

3. A five-year outcomes study found the Tops system reduced pain significantly. Visual Analog Scale leg pain fell from 73 to 3, and leg pain dropped from 71 to 16 after five years. The Oswestry Disability Index dropped from 51 to 8.

4. Tops was recently granted breakthrough device designation from the FDA.
