More than 20 spine and orthopedic surgeons have been honored since the beginning of 2023.
1. Howard An, MD, a spine surgeon at Chicago-based Midwest Orthopedics at Rush, was awarded the 2023 Wiltse Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine.
2. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons honored three orthopedic surgeons. Mark Myerson, MD, received the 2023 Humanitarian Award; Alex Jahangir, MD, earned the 2023 William W. Tipton Jr., MD, Leadership Award, and Mary O'Connor, MD, received the 2023 Diversity Award.
3. Orthopedic surgeon Kevin Farmer, MD, team physician for the Florida Gators college football team at Gainesville-based University of Florida, has been named the 2023 Southeastern Conference Team Physician of the Year.
4. Neurosurgeon Bennie Chiles, III, MD, received his fourth consecutive Top Doctor honor from Castle Connolly.
5. James Voos, MD, chairman of the orthopedics department at University Hospitals Cleveland (Ohio) Medical Center and head team physician for the NFL's Cleveland Browns, has been awarded the annual NFL Physicians Society Arthur C. Rettig Award for Academic Excellence.
6. Orthopedic surgeon Army Col. Benjamin "Kyle" Potter, MD, received the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine's Army Hero of Military Medicine Award.
7. The Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Foundation named Holly Johnson, MD, and Casey Humbyrd, MD, as the recipients of two women's leadership awards. Dr. Johnson received the career impact award, and Dr. Humbyrd received the career development award.
8. Nathan Skelly, MD, of Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health earned the 2023 Chester B. McVay Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research.
9. Spine surgeon Frank Cammisa Jr., MD, was honored by New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery for his work in the spine surgery industry.
10. Phil Johnson, MD, has been awarded the USA Hockey Excellence in Safety Award, which honors those who go above and beyond to make hockey safer for participants, following his 30 years of service to the U.S. national junior hockey team.
11. Richard Ferkel, MD, received the 2023 Arthroscopy Association of North America Distinguished Service Award.
12. Quin Throckmorton, MD, and Tyler Brolin, MD, orthopedic surgeons with Memphis, Tenn.-based Campbell Clinic, won the Neer award for their shoulder and elbow research. This is the second time the duo won the award since 2016. This year, they won for their study, "Muscle Activation Patterns during Active External Rotation after Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: An Electrophysiological Study of the Teres Minor and Associated Musculature."
13. Orthopedic surgeon Joseph Zuckerman, MD, earned the Orthopaedic Summit: Evolving Techniques Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Zuckerman's career spans nearly 40 years, and he specializes in shoulder arthroplasty and hip and knee reconstruction. He was president of the American Shoulder Elbow Society from 2003 to 2004 and president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons from 2009 to 2010.
14. Cato Laurencin, MD, PhD, earned the Founders Award from the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society.
15. Spine surgeon Brian Fiani, DO, earned the Young Alumni Award from Michigan State University.
16. Joshua Jacobs, MD, earned the 2024 William W. Tipton Jr., MD, Leadership Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
17. Duane Anderson, MD, earned the AAOS' 2024 Humanitarian Award.
18. Boris Zelle, MD, earned the AAOS' 2024 Diversity Award.
19. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons named Steven Glassman, MD, an honorary member, a spokesperson for Norton Medical Group said. Dr. Glassman, of Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Leatherman Spine, is the first person to earn the award since 2007. The honor recognized him for his work to pave collaboration among orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons.
20. Marc Levine, MD, earned the 2024 DeGroote Award from the Medical Society of New Jersey. Dr. Levine, director of orthopedic spine surgery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, was recognized for his service in the medical profession.
21. Michael Ciccotti, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, was honored by the Philadelphia Phillies for 30 years of working with the team. Dr. Ciccotti, who is retiring from this role with the team, spent 25 of those 30 years as head team physician and medical director. He received a custom-framed glove that includes accolades of the players he cared for. This is the first time the team gave a keepsake glove to a non-player.
22. Drew Spencer, MD, medical director of neurosurgery at Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital in Palos Heights, Ill., has received the inaugural St. George Foundation Distinguished Physician Award for neurosurgery. The award recognizes physicians who achieve both personal and professional excellence in the field of neurosurgery.
23. Steven B. Haas, MD, chief of the knee service at New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery, was honored by the hospital for his work.
