One spine metric can improve fusion outcome predictions: Study

Spine

The vertebral bone quality score can help improve predictions for the fusion risk score for patients undergoing thoracic and lumbar spinal fusions, according to a study in the July 1 issue of Spine.

Researchers evaluated various perioperative adverse outcomes in elective thoracic and lumbar spine patients between January 2019 to June 2020. The VBQ score was weighted on a regression moden and added to the fusion risk score, and the ability of the scores to prdict outcomes were assessed.

A total 353 cases met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the FRS/VBQ scores showed improved predictive ability compared to FRS alone.

The study concluded, "Adding VBQ to the FRS significantly enhances its predictive accuracy for reoperation rate. This updated risk score provides a more comprehensive understanding of a patient’s preoperative risk profile, aiding both patients and physicians in assessing surgical risks and optimizing outcomes through preoperative risk stratification."
