Ramin Rak, MD, has been elected treasurer of the Suffolk County Medical Society.
Here are five things to know about Dr. Rak:
1. Dr. Rak is a board-certified neurosurgeon and director of awake craniotomy and brain mapping at the Long Island Brain Tumor Center at Great Neck, N.Y.-based Neurological Surgery. He is also the director of the brain tumor program at North Shore-LIJ Huntington (N.Y.) Hospital.
2. Dr. Rak focuses on brain and spine surgery. His areas of expertise include treating brain tumors, cerebrovascular and skull base diseases. His clinical interests also include minimally invasive micro-neurosurgical techniques, which he uses to perform most of his brain and spinal surgeries, and in stereotactic radiosurgery.
3. Dr. Rak is actively involved in basic neuroscience and clinical research, which includes the use of adult olfactory ensheathing glial cells and Schwann cells in spinal cord injuries as well as reperfusion injuries after treatment of stroke.
4. Dr. Rak is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He was appointed to the board of directors of the Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics in 2013. He will also be involved in organizing 2018/2019 World Brain Mapping conference in New York City.
5. "It is a great honor to be chosen by my peers to serve in this key position," said Dr. Rak regarding his appointment as treasurer. The Suffolk County Medical Society's mission is to act as the premier professional medical association for the physicians of Suffolk County by maintaining a representative and united organization.
