American Bone Health, Medtronic, UCSF Medical Center and Spinal Diagnostics and Treatment Center have joined to host the first Walk Tall for Life Spinal Fracture Awareness Walk and Health Fair in San Francisco next month, according to a Medtronic news release.
The walk was organized to promote awareness of bone fractures, including spinal compression fractures. An estimated 900,000 spinal compression fractures occur every year in the United States, mainly in women suffering from osteoporosis, according to the release.
Participants will walk 3.3 kilometers, representing the 33 vertebrae of the spine. They will receive wrist weights to promote weight-bearing exercise, which prevents fractures caused by osteoporosis.
