In response to recent studies supporting and disputing the effectiveness of vertebroplasty, the North American Spine Society has called for a "thorough and systematic review of all the literature in order to better define a subgroup of patients for which vertebroplasty might be appropriate," according to an organization news release.
NASS encourages the consideration of new studies, continually adding to the scientific literature on vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. NASS supports the process surrounding the new guideline from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommending against vertebroplasty but declines to comment further on the decision.
However, the release does state that recommendations should be updated pending the publication of additional studies examining different populations, if the research reaches a different conclusion.
