Study: Stand-Alone Anterior Carbon I/F Cage for ALIF a Safe Procedure

The anterior I/F cage is a safe surgical option for treating single-level lumbar degenerative disc disease and additional benefit could be gained from adjunctive posterior stabilization, according to an article published in Spine.

Researchers studied 112 patients undergoing the anterior lumbar interbody fusion with the I/F cage. Patients were rated on a scale of 1-4 as to the efficacy of the procedure.

The mean estimated blood loss was 134 mL, and the mean duration of hospitalization was 3.3 days. Overall, the patient success was 25 percent, and clinical success was present in 46.3 percent of the patients. The fusion was a success in 57.5 percent of the patients, and 87.5 percent of the patients avoided a second surgical intervention.

Disc space height was significantly increased, which was maintained over two years.
