UC Health to pay $4.1M in settlement: 5 things to know

UC Health and West Chester Hospital will pay up for a former spine surgeon's actions, according to Cincinnati Business Courier.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. Between 2010 and 2013, Abubakar Atiq Durrani, MD, submitted more than $7 million in Medicare reimbursements.

 

2. UC Health will pay up for its alleged Medicaid and Medicare submissions for the spine procedures deemed unnecessary.

 

3. The health system denies the government's allegations, but does not want a lengthy investigative process.

 

4. UC Health did not employ Dr. Durrani, but he was affiliated with West Chester Hospital for some time.

 

5. Dr. Durrani fled the United States in 2013 following his indictment for healthcare fraud.
