Here are all the spine and neurosurgeons who joined new hospitals or practices, or were promoted to new leadership positions over the past year.

Anne Normand, MD, joined Essentia Health-Duluth (Minn.) Clinic.

 

F. Todd Wetzel, MD, left his post as vice chair of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine for Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia to become the chief of orthopedics at Bassett Healthcare Network in upstate New York.

 

Novant Health Brain and Spine Surgery in Charlotte, N.C., welcomed neurosurgeon Erin Kiehna, MD.

 

Watertown, N.Y-based Samaritan Medical Center reported its only neurosurgeon, Serge Rasskazoff, MD, will retire in February 2018.

 

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City named Viviane Tabar, MD, chair of neurosurgery.

 

Tom Reinsel, MD, joined Huntington W.Va.-based Marshall Health.

 

Minimally invasive spine surgeon James Dwyer, MD, joined Mine Hill Township, N.J.-based Champey Pain and Spine Group.

 

Brian Fernholz, MD, PhD, joined Mischer Neuroscience Associates in The Woodlands, Texas.

 

Mount Sinai Co-Director of the Neurosurgical Spine Program Arthur Jenkins, MD, is planning to transition into full-time private practice at the beginning of 2018. He will maintain academic affiliation as faculty as well as surgical and admitting privileges at Mount Sinai.

OrthoConnecticut's Danbury (Conn.) Orthopedics welcomed spine surgeon Justin Paul, MD, PhD. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery and has published numerous scientific articles on avoiding complications during complex spine procedures.

Methodist Hospitals, based in Gary, Ind., and Merrillville, Ind., added Nassir Mansour, MD. He serves as an assistant neurosurgery professor at State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in New York City.

Michael Glover, MD, joined Meridian-based Spine Institute of Idaho. Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Glover is affiliated with the North American Spine Society.

Ken Nwosu, MD, joined Puyallup, Wash.-based Neospine. He completed the Harvard Combined Spine Fellowship at Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan's Comprehensive Spine Center welcomed neurosurgeon Jared Fridley, MD. He specializes in complex spine surgery, degenerative spine disease, spinal trauma, tumors and peripheral nerve surgery.

Phoenix-based OrthoArizona welcomed Caleb Behrend, MD, to its practice. In addition to performing cervical spine reconstruction, Dr. Behrend has a special interest in adult scoliosis and deformity surgery.

Jay Jagannathan, MD, joined the Helen Newberry (Mich.) Joy Hospital Specialty Clinic. Dr. Jagannathan has authored various papers and book chapters on spine surgery, radiosurgery and neuro-oncology.

Neurosurgeon Len Cerullo, MD, opened the Len Cerullo Method clinic in Chicago. The Len Cerullo Method clinic offers a personalized and holistic approach to chronic pain treatment.

Marlton, N.J.-based Virtua cut the ribbon at the new Virtua Brain and Spine Institute at Mount Holly, N.J.-based Virtua Memorial Hospital. James Sanfilippo, MD, will chair the institute.

John Soliman, DO, is now offering neurological and spine consultations for Physician Partners of America in Tampa, Fla. He founded the Brain and Spine Neuroscience Institute, with offices in Lutz and Brooksville, both in Florida.

Ali Rezai, MD, left Columbus-based Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to join Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Medicine. He now leads clinical trails and research programs at WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, a new program for the health system.

Marco A. Rodriguez, MD, opened the International Spine Institute in Baton Rouge, La. He previously treated patients in South Carolina for five years, before founding the International Spine Institute.

Robert Huang, MD, joined Sacred Heart's Pediatric Care Center at Gulf Breeze (Fla.). State University of New York Center for Advanced Technologies granted Dr. Huang funds for osteoporosis research and Palms Clinic and Hospital Corporation awarded him grant money to study spinal fusion.

Galena, Kan.-based Orthopedic Specialists of the Four States welcomed its third spine surgeon, Toby Moore, DO. He previously treated patients at Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Front Range Orthopedics.

Brian Willis, MD, will serve as the interim chairman of Louisiana-based LSU Health Shreveport's neurosurgery department, effective Nov. 1. Dr. Willis replaces Anil Nanda, MD.

Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, N.Y., welcomed neurosurgeon Arturo Camacho, MD. He underwent fellowship training at Cleveland Clinic.

Conway (Ark.) Regional Health System welcomed Regan S. Gallaher, MD, to its team. Equipped with about 20 years of experience, Dr. Gallaher specializes in treating spinal illness and trauma.

Spine surgery specialist Michael Mauro, DO, joined Healthpointe in La Mirada, Calif. Dr. Mauro underwent fellowship training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Jonathan Workman, DO, joined HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Ill. He specializes in treating adult degenerative spinal conditions and performing minimally invasive surgery and cervical disc replacement.

Mina Safain, MD, heads Hallmark Health's Melrose (Mass.)-Wakefield Hospital new neurosurgery program. He specializes in pituitary and brain tumors, meningiomas, minimally invasive spine surgery, complex and reconstructive spine surgery, spinal microsurgery and spinal trauma.

Naperville, Ill.-based Edward Hospital welcomed David Peng, MD, to its staff. Dr. Peng performs epidural steroid injections, radiofrequency ablation procedures, spinal cord stimulation, kyphoplasty and more.

Lee Titsworth, MD, PhD, joined Baptist Health Medical Group Neurosurgery in Paducah, Ky. He is a pediatric neurosurgeon with clinical interests in scoliosis surgery and endoscopic brain surgery.

Milwaukee Orthopaedic Group welcomed Mustafa Khan, MD, whose clinical interests include spinal stenosis, disc herniations, radiculopathy, sciatica, spinal instability and degenerative disc disease.

Pinehurst (N.C.) Surgical Clinic welcomed Alexander Lemons, MD, to its team. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery; cervical, thoracic and lumbar degenerative disease; cervical disc replacement; spine trauma; scoliosis; sciatica and cervical and lumbar disc herniation.

Linda M. Liau, MD, PhD, is the new neurosurgery department chair at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles. She is the second woman ever to chair an academic neurosurgery department in the U.S.

Nathan Littauer Hospital in Nursing Home in Gloversville, N.Y., welcomed Joseph Popper, MD. He specializes in cervical spine surgery and minimally invasive lumbar spine surgery.

Neurosurgeon Kadhya David Muballe, MD, is returning to Port Elizabeth, South Africa to create a neurosurgery department at the Livingstone. Previously, Dr. Muballe served as a neurosurgeon at Seattle-based Washington School of Medicine.

Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System welcomed Prayash Patel, MD. He underwent a fellowship focused on complex spine conditions and minimally invasive surgery for degenerative spine disorders.

Spine surgeons Uzodu Agochukwu, MD, Vamsi Kancherla, MD, and Christopher Blanchard, DO, joined Atlanta-based Resurgens Spine Center.

Denver Spine Surgeons in Greenwood Village, Colo., welcomed Okezie Aguwa, MD.

The American Health Council named Christopher DeMassi, MD, standing medical director of Hollywood, Fla.-based Memorial HealthCare System, to its physician board.

Neurosurgeon Rafeek Woods, MD, joined Lakeland Health in St. Joseph, Mich.

John Caruso, MD, joined WVU Medicine's neurosurgery department and will serve as director of neurological surgery at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.V.

Zackary Child, MD, joined the Tahoe Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Huntington, W.Va.-based Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine welcomed Nicolas Phan, MD, to its neurosurgery department.

Neurosurgeon Lon Alexander, MD, joined Rush Health in Chicago.

Matthew Schreckinger, MD, joined the Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria, Calif.

Neurosurgeon Drew Spencer, MD, joined the Edwards Neurosciences Institute in Naperville, Ill.

Merit Health Central in Jackson, Miss., welcomed neurosurgeon Menarvia Nixon Gaddis, MD.

Adil Samad, MD, joined Tampa-based Florida Orthopaedic Institute.

Effingham, Ill.-based HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital welcomed spine surgeon Jonathan Workman, DO.

George Ghobrial, MD, joined Novant Health Forsyth Brain and Spine Surgery in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Mountain Home, Ark.-based Baxter Regional Medical Center's Lucas Bradley, MD, will head the medical center's new neurosurgery and spine clinic.

Williamsport, Pa.-based UPMC Susquehanna welcomed neurosurgeon James Fick, MD, to its neurosciences team.

Newton-Wellesley (Mass.) Hospital named Louis Jenis, MD, its new chief medical and innovation officer.

Plano-based Texas Back Institute welcomed neurosurgeon Blake Staub, MD.

Kansas City, Mo.-based Saint Luke's Marion Bloch Neuroscience Institute named Cheerag D. Upadhyaya, MD, a surgical co-director.

Poughkeepsie, N.Y.-based MidHudson Regional Hospital welcomed orthopedic surgeon Yigal Samocha, MD, to the medical staff. He completed a fellowship at Texas Back Institute in Plano.

Neurosurgeon Ernest E. Braxton, MD, is joining Vail-Summit Orthopaedics in July. He specializes in brain tumors, neurotrauma and complex and minimally invasive spine surgery.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Mass., welcomed Louis Jenis, MD, as new chief medical and innovation officer. Dr. Jenis has been practicing orthopedic surgery for 20 years, specializing in spine surgery.

Samaritan Neurosurgery in Corvallis, Ore., welcomed spine surgeon Wael Ghacham, MD. He subspecializes in degenerative disorders, spinal fractures and spinal deformities.

Minneapolis-based University of Minnesota Medical School appointed Clark Chen, MD, PhD, head of the neurosurgery department. Dr. Chen will also serve as the Lyle French Chair in Neurosurgery.

John C. McElroy, MD, joined Orthopedic Associates of Flower Mound (Texas). Dr. McElroy has a special interest in open and minimally invasive spine surgery.

Mayfield Brain & Spine and TriHealth, both based in Cincinnati, are working together to build the TriHealth Neuroscience Institute. Andrew Ringer, MD, Mayfield's director of cerebrovascular surgery, will head the institute. Christopher McPherson, MD, and Michael Kachmann, MD, will serve as site directors for neurosurgery at Good Samaritan Hospital and Bethesda North, both based in Cincinnati, respectively.

Timothy E. Lindley, MD, PhD, joined Heartland Orthopedic Specialists in Alexandria, Minn.

Farmington-based UConn Health appointed Ketan Bulsara, MD, its new neurosurgery division chief. In his new role, Dr. Bulsara will help expand the epilepsy program to involve neurosurgery treatments and recruit new neurosurgeons.

University of Cincinnati College of Medicine named Joseph Cheng, MD, its new neurosurgery chair, effective July 1. Among his new responsibilities, Dr. Chen will focus on improving postgraduate education as well as boost interactions between neurosurgery and other neuroscience-related departments.

M. Nicholas Perenich, DO, joined Tampa, Fla.-based BioSpine Institute. Much of his research focuses on biologic graft use in complex stem cell tissue regeneration.

Spine surgeon Sukhbir "Sonny" Guram, MD, joined Hendersonville, N.C.-based Southeastern Sports Medicine and Orthopedics last week. He treats the cervical and lumbar spine and specializes in spinal stenosis, radiculopathy and degenerative disc disease, utilizes laminectomy and performs cervical and lumbar fusion.

Tobias Mattei, MD, joined Easter Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, complex spine and deformity surgery, oncological spine surgery, spinal stimulation, kyphoplasty and artificial cervical and lumbar discs.

Southern California Institute in Thousand Oaks added orthopedic spine surgeon Edmund Choi, MD, to its team. He lectures on osteoporosis, pediatric and adult spine reconstruction, bone and spinal tumors and fractures at national and international conferences.

Richard Frieden, MD, joined Marquette, Mich.-based UP Health System's Brain & Spine Center.

Kirkland, Wash.-based EvergreenHealth welcomed Peter Nora, MD, to the system. He specializes in deep brain stimulation surgery for movement disorders as well as spine disease treatment.

Andrew W. Moulton, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon, is now Lakewood Ranch (Fla.) Medical Center's chief of surgery.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons appointed Jacob M. Buchowski, MD, of St. Louis-based Washington University School of Medicine, to its board of directors.

Neurosurgeon Stephen Ondra, MD, joined Louisville, Ky.-based RowdMap as head of clinical risk innovation strategy.

Spencer (Iowa) Hospital welcomed orthopedic spine surgeon Daniel McGuire, MD, to its ranks.

Milwaukee-based Medical College of Wisconsin appointed Shekar N. Kurpad, MD, PhD, chair of its department of neurosurgery.

New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery welcomed spine surgeon Sheeraz Qureshi, MD, MBA.

Shawnee Mission (Kan.) Health added neurosurgeons Paul O'Boynic, MD, and Darren Lovick, MD, to its new neurosurgery specialty practice, Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

Poughkeepsie, N.Y.-based MidHudson Regional Hospital welcomed Mark C. Watts, MD, to its neurosciences team.

Riverhead, N.Y.-based Peconic Bay Medical Center, a part of Great Neck, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, named Robert M. Galler, DO, the new director of neurosurgery.

Jocelyn Idema, DO, moved her spine practice to the Advanced Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in Washington, Pa., and Pittsburgh. She previously practiced at the Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics – MMI division in Maryland.

The Freeman Spine and Pain Institute has relocated its Edison, N.J., office to 10 Parsonage Road. The Freeman Spine and Pain Institute's founder is Eric D. Freeman, DO.

Last week, Tampa-based Bonati Spine Institute opened a location in Las Vegas. Alfred Bonati, MD, founded Bonati Spine Institute and opened the new location at an event that included around 200 people.
