Greenville Shriners Hospital introduces new procedure for pediatric scoliosis patient: 5 insights

Spine

Greenville (S.C.) Shriners Hospital began offering halos as scoliosis treatment.

Here are five insights.

1. The halo attaches to a patient's skull via three screws in the back and two in the front.

2. Attached to a pulley system, a halo gradually introduces pressure to pull up the spine.

3. With each treatment, the pressure increases with the goal of stretching out the curved spine.

4. As the spine stretches, the patient should experience pain relief and ease with breathing.

5. Greenville Shriners Hospital recently treated its first patient with the halo procedure.
