These 2 aspects of spine surgery care are associated with increased patient satisfaction: 4 insights

Spine

Researchers from Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland-based Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine investigated the drivers of patient satisfaction in lumbar spine surgery.

The study included 453 patients receiving lumbar spine surgery. Researchers determined patients reporting a top-box Overall Hospital Rating score (nine or 10 out of 10) were satisfied.

Journal of Neurosurgery published the study.

Here are four insights:

1. Of the patients, 80.1 percent selected a top-box OHR.

2. Researchers found diminished overall health status negatively impacted the top-box OHR.

3. The following survey items were associated with patients selecting a top-box OHR:

  • Staff always did everything they could to help with pain
  • Nurses were always respectful

4. Researchers concluded their results identified key quality improvement opportunities in spine surgery.
