Nearly half of visual-related complications in patients who undergo spinal deformity surgery resolve completely, according to a study in Spine.
Here are four things to know:
1. The retrospective review of the Scoliosis Research Society morbidity and mortality database comprised 167,972 spinal deformity patients who underwent spine surgery from 2009 to 2012.
2. There were 12.5 visual acuity complications per 100,000 patients, or 0.01 percent.
3. Patients with kyphosis were five times more likely to develop VACs.
4. More than 50 percent of VACs occur within 24 hours postoperatively with 19 percent improving postoperatively.
