American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons founder Dr. Donald Reigel passes away

Donald Reigel, MD, 81, passed away, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Dr. Reigel was a board-certified pediatric neurosurgeon who practiced for more than 25 years at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He was a founding member of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons and later served as the organization's president and chairman.

Dr. Reigel also helped lead the Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania, which eventually became the The Woodlands Foundation, a charity for all children with disabilities and life-threatening illness.

He co-founded and served as the managing editor of Pediatric Neurosurgery, the official ASPN journal. He published 125 scientific articles and contributed to more than 20 textbooks. In 1998, Dr. Reigel retired from practice to focus on The Woodlands Foundation.
