Philadelphia neurosurgeon Dr. Bruce Northrup dies

Neurosurgeon and former professor of neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia Bruce Northrup, MD, died July 13, reports The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Dr. Northrup died of complications from Lewy body dementia at Bryn Mawr (Pa.) Hospital.

He practiced at Pennsylvania State University's Medical School in Hershey, the Neurological Institute in Fargo, N.D., and Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Dr. Northrup was president of the Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society and the Cervical Spine Research Society and was co-author of the 1997 textbook, Surgical Approaches to the Spine.

He earned his medical degree at The Ohio State University School of Medicine in Columbus and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
