Dr. Gelareh Zadeh to become Canada's 1st female neurosurgery chair

Spine

On Sept. 1, Gelareh Zadeh, MD, PhD, will become the first female neurosurgery chair in Canada, assuming the role of chair of neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, The Globe and Mail reports.

Three things to know:

1. Dr. Zadeh will be responsible for neurosurgical training and managing about three dozen neurosurgeons at the university.

2. Dr. Zadeh also serves as head of neurosurgery at University Health Network, medical director of the Krembil Brain Institute, both in Toronto, and president of the Society for Neuro-Oncology.

3. The number of female neurosurgeons is growing, but men still far outnumber women in the field. Just 37 of 333 neurosurgeons in Canada are women, according to 2018 data reported by the Canadian Medical Association.
