The Bolt navigation system, designed by Circinus Medical Technologies, was named "best new technology" at the Spine Technology Awards.
"What started as an effort to build something to make my procedures faster and easier with less radiation has developed into a paradigm shift in surgical navigation that will soon be available to every surgeon," John Dorman, MD, Circinus' founder and chairman, said in a Nov. 20 news release.
The system uses an iOS device to support the placement of posterior fixation with sub-1 millimeter accuracy. Its gyroscope-on-chip technology is designed to reduce cost and improve efficiency.
In July, Dr. Dorman closed his practice, Odesa-based West Texas Neurosurgery, and joined Boulder (Colo.) Neurosurgical & Spine Associates.
He focuses on complex spine surgeries and the development of surgical instruments, for which he holds several patents.
