Nine Canadian patients needing spine surgery have been treated at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo (N.D.), Manitoba province officials said March 30.

The cases are part of a pilot program between the province and the hospital, according to a news release. More spine surgeries have been scheduled in the coming weeks. The initiative is coordinated through Manitoba's out-of-province medical referral program.

Plans to bring as many as 300 spine patients from Manitoba to Sanford Health were announced in January. The deal was finalized in February, with initial plans to send five patients.
