The Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame on April 21 will recognize Steven Meyer, MD, as part of its 2022 class for his 25-plus years of humanitarian work as founder of Siouxland Tanzania Educational and Medical Ministries, according to the Sioux City Journal.
Four notes:
1. Dr. Meyers is an orthopedic spine surgeon who practices with MercyOne in Sioux City, Iowa.
2. In 1996, Dr. Meyer and his wife co-founded Siouxland Tanzania Educational Medical Ministries, a nonprofit organization that has completed more than 1,000 general and orthopedic surgeries in Tanzania, according to its website.
3. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recognized Dr. Meyer with its Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2020.
4. Dr. Meyer said the nonprofit aims to raise $2.5 million to support its efforts well into the future.
