The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board of Directors approved appropriate use criteria for non-arthroplasty treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee.
The treatment appropriateness is determined by three separate panels of clinicians representing multiple disciplines. The AUC is available on a mobile-based app that allows clinicians to select a variety of patient characteristics and receive appropriateness recommendations for treatment covered by the AUC.

"AUCs can provide a useful framework for surgeons and their patients to consider the appropriateness of various treatment options, based on the medical evidence and the opinion and experience of experts," said Chair of the AAOS Council on Research and Quality Kevin Bozic, MD, MBA. "However, in addition to the medical evidence, any treatment decision should also take into consideration the physician's experience and expertise and the patient's preferences and values."
